One question as well as the nice par that i put below is, i want to create
2 quires and reports for my company im working with that shows the list of
customers they have that are 18 and over and a list of customers they have
that are under 18 (So they can print this monthly to see who there target
aurdiance is etc) how would i do this? In criteria would i put something
like “>18” and “<18" ?

I wouldn’t call it a waste. Most of the books on the market are designed as
more of a REFERENCE material. They’re OK to look up how to do something
specific. I disagree with the way MOST of them are organized… that’s why
when I wrote my book (The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Microsoft Excel 2010) I
insisted that my publisher let me go with a more step-by-step approach for
the beginning of the book.
Is there a way I can create a report using only data that I specify. There
will be no common factor in the records, but I just know which ones I need
printed, and in an order that I specify (again, having no ‘sortable’ common
factor to sort by). I was wondering if I could create a table – typing in
the ID of each record I want in the report, then create a report that only
pulls those records in that exact order that I’ve got listed. Does that
make sense?

Absolutely. Access is probably the BEST tool for this job. You can print
your directory right from Access and you could set up fields to indicate
which data is private, public, printable, etc.
question: my assignment requires me to use report wizard and use tabular
view, but all I see is block, stepped, and outline. what can I do in that
case?
To point you in the right direction, you’d need some kind of an event to
fire (macro or VBA) which could either open another form or just use SQL to
insert the data into another table automatically. I do cover this stuff,
but in my much more advanced lessons.
Sure… just about anything is possible in Access, but this is WAY beyond
my beginner lessons.

With Windows XP ending it’s very long 12 year run, many people are looking
at replacing their old computers with something new. Since the world, and
needs, have changed for people in 12 years (back then a PC in your home was
the only route to go), the device people need is also different.
Google has been pushing Chromebooks (Chrome OS) as the better replacement
to those upgrading (main points they make is that the OS it’s free, and
simple to use, and immune from Windows viruses). While Linux fans are
pushing heavy that XP users should go to a Linux distro (main points they
make is that the OS is free, simple to use, and immune from Windows
viruses).
I’m sure you see the trend from those two camps, and I’m not going to
debate if you should go Chrome OS or Linux…please do that if you think
you’ll like it better! But the objections made against Windows by both
Chrome OS and Linux have all been addressed by Windows RT, and Surface 2.
In-fact, most users would actually like a Surface 2 if they actually could
see what it can do. And that’s where my review comes in.
Mind you, this is NOT the Surface PRO 2 which runs full Windows 8.1, but
the RT version which runs Windows RT 8.1. I went that route on
purpose…because how many people who are considering Chrome OS or Linux
would even purchase a Surface Pro 2…NONE.
But I’m also a power user. I have full Windows 8.1 on my computer at home.
So why would a power user opt for Windows RT? That was my goal to find
out if it could be a viable device.
Actually, Windows RT has tons of features that make it an even better
option than full Windows 8.1…namely it’s immune from Windows viruses and
malware (just like Chrome OS and Linus), immune from the “Heartbleed”
vulnerability going around right now, and it’s very easy (and intuitive) to
use!
In the end, this device gets used more than my regular desktop PC. I can
even run regular “desktop” programs on it (such as Google Chrome and Chrome
Apps) using the Remote PC app.
I’m sure many in those two camps will be “up in arms” over such a claim
(they are very passionate folks!). Once again, I’m saying go with what you
want to use…but there is an alternative that works just as well, and has
benefits and features that many consumers will love.

But why the Surface 2 instead of the fancy new Surface Pro 3? Great
question, and here are a few:
1) It’s considerably less expensive because it’s not running full Windows
8.1 (which is perfectly fine, because Windows RT 8.1 runs apps from the
Windows Store, is virus and malware free, fast startup, great battery life,
and light). If you replacing your computer with a Surface, then perhaps
the Pro model is more to your liking (or if you REALLY need to run a
desktop program like iTunes, etc.). But I have a regular computer running
Windows 8.1, so my Surface 2 is a companion device…perfect for working in
Office 2013 (RT), surfing the web, email, etc. For the vast majority of
people, that’s exactly what they want.
2) You get Office for free (no subscription). The RT edition of Office
2013 is included, 100% free. Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote
Outlook…all there for you. Plus the “Modern” version of OneNote can be
found in the Windows Store (free) for a more “touch” experience.
3) 200 GB of OneDrive for 2 years…Free. You’ll get 200GB of extra
OneDrive storage at no cost….and it is hard to fill up! It’s a great
deal.
4) Virus and malware free. Since you’re running Windows RT, you’re immune
for things that can sometimes infect “full” Windows.
5) Amazing browser. Everyone picks on IE (mainly for the early 2000’s
versions), but it’s come a long way and is my favorite touch browser.
Highly secure (highest malware protection rate…more than Chrome),
beautiful and intuitive “touch” features, and completely chromeless (no
border) for an immerse (and fast) web browsing experience.
So go to your local Microsoft Store (or Microsoft Store online) to get one
(remember, you have a 30 day return period to see if you like it). Be sure
to get the “package” offers they have, which often come with “Complete”
(warranty), keyboard (the ‘type’ keyboard is the best), and carrying case.
You often can save some bucks getting the package instead of getting those
all separately.

Hey Alan. You mentioned that you’re a Graphic Designer- ditto :), at least
as a hobby or whenever people need something. What programs can you use on
the Surface 2? Are you able to use Illustrator, or any Adobe programs- or
can you not because it’s a tablet and fairly limited with its capabilities?

When I get surface 2 I’m gonna get the micro HDMI adapter so that I can
watch YouTube on TV
i dont think he mentioned the USB port built into the adaptor, you can
charge your phone in that and have the port on the surface free for
something else!

for a while now but wanted to switch from my old laptop to something new.
I’m a student and have tried doing work on the ipad but found it cumbersome
even with the new Microsoft office apps. Think the surface 2 can handle my
