Hello, I don’t think moving the windows stutters. When you move a window, I
think it just draws a simple border to where you want to position it. When
you let go of your mouse, it’ll probably redraw the new window’s position
instantly. Yes, I did install the Guest Additions, I make myself do that
everytime I create a new VM.
This is so cool. It’s almost like running native apps. One question Guido,
I’m concerned about the VirtualBox’s graphics performance when running Win
7. Doesn’t the desktop animations (like moving windows) stutter? Did you
install the Guest Additions?
Yes, I think so. Although I haven’t tested that yet, there’s a very likely
chance it will work just as well. You can tweak your winconn repository to
work with the latest (K)ubuntu releases and I think it’s also very likely
to connecto to your Windows 8 box. Thank you for asking, I might post a new
video demonstrating this.
thanks for your video will this work on kubuntu 13.10 with win8 in
virtualbox?
The host is Ubuntu. Windows is the client that is running in a VM here.
Your hardware requirements should match a regular computer on which you can
run a single virtualized Windows 7 box, and preferably have enough RAM
space available to run other applications. You don’t really need to have a
high-end computer, but a cheap/old system is not going to get you far
either.
so, your host OS is Ubuntu or Win7? which hardware requirements does it
need to work?
Hmm, are you using windows 7 ultimate? You could also check if rdp itself
works. Can you remote desktop into your windows 7 box?
OK. Thanks for responding! … Because that’s the only thing I did
differently from the instructions and for some reason I can’t get it to
work It just says ‘Connection to Server Failed’ in WinConn… Any clues
of what to check? Thanks again.
Oh sure, that’ll work fine I bet. Though it would be nice to add the
repository, as the package would be updated automatically.
Hi thanks for this Does the winconn debian file available from
launch-pad not work for this?
Please change to your repositories as I demonstrate at 1:10. Change the
lines corresponding to your distribution.
Hi, I just can’t install winconn. I run the first command from their
website to add the winconn repository, I update the system, but when I run
the command “sudo apt-get install winconn” it sais that it cannot find the
package. I made the same thing on my laptp a few days ago and it worked. I
just don’t know what to do next. Please help!
Yes, a VM is required to run. As it’s simply using RDP, you do have to log
off (not shutdown!) from your VM. You can also use WinConn to contact real
and physical Windows clients and servers, because, again, it simply uses
RDP. This eliminates the use of a VM running in background.
you need to have turned on the virtual machine to run officcce 2013?
I am not, nor will I ever be turned on by a VM.
olny go whit the VM is a turn on? and if you have RDP whit me Windows 8
instaled in on particion of mi disc, is possible?
You could install SkyDrive on a Windows VM and have it save its files on a
VirtualBox Shared Folder, using the Guest Additions. This enables you to
access the files from your own file manager in Ubuntu. It’s a rather bulky
solution, but it’d get the job done. I’d advice to google “skydrive
ubuntu”; itsfoss.com describes a less resource intensive solution without a
VM. OneNote should work just as easy.
Thanks for the video! I just have one question. Is it possible to use
SkyDrive with MS Office on ubuntu, just like on MS windows? And I assume,
that there would be no problems with running OneNote application?
1) It works just like RemoteApp, so yes you can run other applications from
within your Windows VM. 2) Yes, a VM is required to run, but as it’s simply
using RDP, you HAVE to log off (not shutdown!) from your VM. You can also
use it to contact real and physical Windows clients and servers, because it
simply uses RDP. This eliminates the use of a VM running in background.
Hi, thanks for nice vid. Two questions: 1. Can we run other Win programs
using this method? Like QuickBooks for example (accounting software) – this
is the only thing holdinng me at MS-Win lineups. 2. Do we need to keep VM
running? Or simpling after logging off in Win7 in VM we can close this app
(most probably no but pls confirm). Thx
hi i followed the exact same procedure but im getting an error “connection
to server failed” can u please tell me a solution for it?
thank you for this video and quick response.
could linux mint 15 running Microsoft Office 2013 using WinConn like this
way?
Sure, just make sure you edit your repository file so you get the Quantal
version, which is, to my knowledge, still the most recent build.
try to place WINWORD.EXE as application and close the firewall in your
windows 7.
